African American Masculinity in Media
- African American males are often stereotyped by music such as Rap and R&B.
- The lyrics and music videos from these songs describe drug use, violence, and domestic violence against women.
- These negative stereotypes lead to psychological subordination in African American males.
Psychological Affects
- The negative protrayals of African American males in the media leads to a psychological complex.
- African Americans feel they need to be subordinate to White male domination in order to fit into society.
- In a study conducted in 1964 it was found that "Black students performed better on IQ tests when they believed their
performance would be compared to other Blacks as opposed to Whites," (Aronson 798).
Stereotype Influences on Pedagogues
- The stereotypes presented by the media have had negative influence on the mindsets of teachers.
- In 1988 a survey was conducted among 500 teachers in New Orleans. Of the 500 teachers, approximately 6 out of every
10 teachers did not believe their African American male students would go to college (Garibaldi 2).
Results
- Leads to social reproduction among the African American community and thus furthers stereotypes presented by the media.
- A recent study of African American males in Chicago shows that 45% of those individuals, between the ages of 20 to
24, are unemployed (Watson 2).
What can we do about it?
- Put yourself in the "danger zone." Volunteer or help out in a community that desperately needs it. Help reverse the stereotypes.
- Be aware. Know that this problem is ongoing and do not be afraid to fight it.
- Be a part of Board Education meetings and vote for positive legislation concerning minority communities.
- Everyone deserves an equal opportunity for a just education help fight for marginalized groups within your community.
