Society Pressures- Beauty Myth: many young women can be preoccupied with their personal image and their relationships
with others.
- Video Girl: the image for African American
girls is to be valued by their body and their sexuality.
- Sexually active: pressures to grow up fast by having sex, and the problems to come along with that such as teen pregnancy
or Sexually Transmitted Disease.
Teachers
Role- Same Standard: students
are held to the same standard no matter gender or race.
- Same Opportunity:
students are given the chance to take all classes, and same roles in the classroom.
- Role Model: teachers need to provide a positive and strong leadership role to the students so they
see this and have something to model after.
Standardized Testing- Boys do better in math concepts, spatial skills, natural science, and geopolitical knowledge.
- 4th grade African American girls score higher in history and continues
through 8th grade but is wiped out by 12th grade
Great Strides- Spelman College: in 1881 Spelman College opened, the first college for African American women in
the United States, founded by Sophia B. Packard and harriet E. Giles.
- Little Rock, Arkansas: on September 24, 1957 Dwight D. Eisenhower sent federal troops to ensure integration of the
all white Central High School.
- Leadership: more and
more African American are taking leadership roles or standing out in society as good role models.
