Statement of Purpose:

The purpose of this webpage is to explore the ways gender issues affect pedagogy and students in the academic setting.  We will examine how critical pedagogy, media, sexual orientation, and race play into the affects of gender, and what teachers can do to combat the negative side effects of some of these issues.  We will provide practical solutions teachers can use to create a gender-equal classroom. Finally, we will provide other sources teachers can explore for further reading on the subject.

The Influence for this Website:

Although it appears that gender is something that has been overcome over the course of American history, it still negatively affects the achievement of many students. As members of school communities, a greater society, and as future teachers and perhaps parents, we must address these issues head on, in order to instill in students an understanding of the ways gender affects society and the dynamics of communities. By taking a critical look into many of the issues that may go unnoticed or unchanged, we have the opportunity to change the status quo philosophy that seems to trap many students in a world of inequality.
